about

A witty jokester and ballad singer who hailed from Glenville, West Virginia, Phyllis Marks had a memory that remained crystal clear long into old age. Before singing one of the many songs Phyllis learned in her childhood, she would often share a poem that her own mother had written: “If I make people smile on this sin-cursed earth, where there’s little mirth, I will not have lived in vain.” This improvisation is inspired by this saying, as well as the phrase "it's raining pitchforks with old maids for handles."

lyrics

If I make people smile
on this sin-cursed earth,
where there’s little mirth,
I will not have lived in vain

Raining

Raining pitchforks with old maids for handles
Pitchforks with old maids all day
Raining pitchforks with old maids for handles
Pitchforks with old maids all day
